Course Summary

Biochemistry is a fascinating and incredibly active field of study. It includes every chemical process which can occur in living material. Biochemistry has applications in nearly all aspects of human life, but some of the most noteworthy specialisms include archaeological dating, research into diseases and their treatments, forensic science and mitigating or reversing he effects of environmental degradation.

The University of British Columbia’s BSC in Biochemistry includes a strong basis in biochemistry generally as well as some training in the many ways biochemistry reaches out to other fields, including Chemistry, Food Science and Microbiology, just to name a few.

You’ll learn both academic and practical laboratory skills from UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, as this program’s primary focus in on human biochemistry – an understanding of the chemical reactions which make human life possible. It is a great way to prepare for graduate programs involving biochemical research or which touches on the life sciences in any way.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over 4 years of full time study.

You’ll begin by taking several basic modules designed to ensure that you have the necessary mathematical, chemical and life sciences skills to prosper in this program. In your second year you’ll explore more specific subjects like organic chemistry and cell biology. In year three you’ll learn laboratory skills and the latest biochemical testing techniques, as well as learning how biochemical research is done. In your final year, you’ll study the most advanced modules UBC has to offer.

Year 1 Modules Include:

  • Differential Calculus with Applications to Life Sciences
  • Genetics, Evolution and Ecology
  • Laboratory Investigations in Life Science
  • Structure and Bonding in Chemistry

Year 2 Modules Include:

  • Fundamentals of Biochemistry
  • Fundamentals of Cell Biology
  • Introduction to Chemical Analysis
  • Introductory Medical Biochemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Year 3 Modules Include:

  • Biochemistry Laboratory
  • Contemporary Biochemical Research
  • General Biochemistry

Year 4 Modules Include:

  • Enzymology
  • Nucleic Acids-Structure and Function
  • Proteins: Structure and Function
  • Recombinant DNA Techniques

Learning And Teaching

The University of British Columbia’s Biochemistry BSc program is delivered primarily through lectures and seminars, though you will also attend laboratory skills workshops and special events. Some modules may be available as distance learning or blended learning programs.

You’ll learn in the Life Sciences Centre, one of the most advanced life and biomedical sciences research facilities in the country. There you’ll be one of more than 600 trainees and staff working under more than 80 faculty investigators.

Career Possibilities

This degree will prepare you for almost any graduate level work you can imagine, whether that be in Biochemistry, the Biomedical Sciences more broadly or even in a Pharmacy, Dental, Medical or Law training program.

Recent graduates have become PGD Candidates, Associate Attorneys, Dentists, Medical Students and Graduate Students at the University of British Columbia, Sullival & Cromwell LLP, the Baker Hill Dental Clinic, The University of Alberta and the University of Minnesota.

Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 4 year BSc degree.

Applicants must typically have completed a university preparatory program at a senior secondary school, or the international equivalent. Great weight will be given to the GPA earned by your final year.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
